The Tourist Educator
I observed for many years that Ethiopians are the major component of the tourist industry in Ethiopia. Ethiopians travel in and out of the country in thousands. In addition to tourism some of these Ethiopians participate in academic projects such as workshops, seminars, conferences, short course delivery etc. Some Ethiopians participate in NGO work, some support schools and also participate in youth empowerment. Such works can be organized as “The Tourist Educator” (TEDU), and more value can be added in it. For example if I go to Aksum University to give a seminar, I can be used to conduct a workshop on youth empowerment and opportunities for the youth. If you go just to have fun for a few days in Addis, you can donate some of your time to the TEDU program, where you can do something related to TEDU activities. TEDU works as follows 1) It has volunteers in universities and colleges, even industries and NGOs in Ethiopia 2) TEDU works with these these institutions to identify their needs and publishes them in its social media websites like facebook. Now when you are traveling to Ethiopia you will go to the site, identify a possible volunteer work for yourself and your colleagues. The benefit of this activity is that it will add value to your tourist experience. So lets establish TEDU right now. TEDU is not limited to only Ethiopians, it can work with any tourist interested in education.
