Pi DAY

March 14.  is designated as PI Day. PI=3.14 (and a few more digits). This day is designated as PI day by US congress. There are two lessons 1) study history of science, and use the day to promote quality science and math education in the United States 2) The rule of law, a zealot group or an individual can not declare a national day or erect a monument, it is only the congress that can do it. Ethiopia, pay attention on this.

MARCH 14 OR 3.14- THE MOST IMPORTANT NUMBER IS STEM

———

HERE IS A SIMPLE EXPERIMENT YOU CAN DO TO VERIFY THAT PI IS ABOUT 3.14

IT IS DONE BY ROLLING A SODA CAN ON YOUR DINING TABLE.

1) MAKE SURE THE CAN IS EMPTY

2) USE MARKER AND MARK A VISIBLE POINT ON THE EDGE OF THE CAN WHERE THE CAN TOTCHES THE TABLE.

3) MARK A POINT ON THE TABLE RIGHT BELOW THE MARK ON THE CAN — CALL IT A

4) ROLE THE CAN UNTIL THE POINT ON THE CAN COMES BACK TO THE TABLE AFTER ONE ROTATION. NOW MARK A SECOND PONT ON THE TABLE RIGHT BELOW THE POINT ON THE CAN, AND CALL IT B

5) MEASURE THE DISTANCE BETWEEN A AND B – THIS DISTANCE IS THE CIRCUMFERENCE OF THE THE SODA CAN- CALL IT C

6) MEASURE THE DIAMETER OF THE SODA CAN- CALL IT D

7) NOW DIVIDE C BY D,

8) REPORT YOUR RESULT HERE

— THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO DO THIS, USING A CIRCULAR PLATE, AND STRING.

Measuring the Circumference of the Earth

MEASURE THE CIRCUMFERENCE OF THE EARTH.
Hadush Hagos — and colleagues
Part II- Measuring the circumference of the earth live video coming up in about 30 minutes.. Yesterday results from Greensboro NC, for the radius 3107 miles, the actual value is 3959 miles. This is a 20% error. From Mekele Hadush Hagos calculated 5900 miles. His error may have come from one of which can be He does not have a vertical object, in this case the shadow can be longer than it should . ALSO IF YOU ARE USING TAPE MEASURE USE SIMILAR UNITS FOR BOTH THE OBJECT LENGTH AND THE SHADOW LENGTH. Remember one inch is 2.54 cm. So 20 inches is about 30 cm.

Hadush Hagos (Mekele), Hiwi Hagos (Aliena/adigrat) Addis Mekonnen (Bahir Dar) Tesfalem Zeleke (Gondar) Fekadu Ethiopia Mandefro (Addis Ababa) Tigist Nigatu (Addis Ababa) Minilek Tiruneh (Addis Ababa) Samson Mulatu (Agaro) — September 22 Friday, at 12:00 noon (your local) time. You will measure the length of the shadow of a meter stick. MAKE SURE THAT THE METER STICK STANDS VERTICAL, It is good to do it with friends and students. I will come again on live video tomorrow same time. I will also post the distances that will go into your calculation for each town We will use this website for the distances. It takes some work. https://www.distance.to/

#ETHIOPIANASTRONOMY

March 20 the spring equinox– Don’t forget to let your students measure the diameter of the earth. We did this measurement on September 21/20 5 months ago. The sun will be back to the same location. You can see it here –this video was taken 5 months ago
