African Annular Solar Eclipse June 21 2020

The African Annular Solar Eclipse happens on June 21 2020, on the day of the summer solstice.. According to this crude google map the eclipse begins in south central Africa and head into Southern Sudan and into the heartlands of Ethiopia. Schools, students, parents, teachers, and the entire tourist industry around the eclipse is gearing up to do their Citizen Science and observation. In order to be part of this movement, communities of the Ethiopian Scientific and Academic Network (ESAN) are participating in the 1st ESAN Solstice Conference on Astorphysical Sciences on the eve of the eclipse on June 20 2020 8:00AM EST or 4:00 PM Ethiopian.

Scientific and Educational Activities

1.  Solar Poetry Competition 2.  Eclipse related student small student projects – Compare the time it takes to charge your battery using solar power before and after the eclipse 3. Student Science and Technology reporting project (Journalism) 4.  Student project: Correlating Eclipses and people responses (Social Science research) 5.  Eclipse Photography 6. Facebook live- to engage the larger community a) Ask an astronomer- b) the moon – Children will sing about the Moon

Etsegenet Getachew says: I hope all of you are healthy and safe in this challenging time. The Ethiopia space science technology institute has formed organizing committees at a national level with Ethiopia space science society, minster of cultural and tourism, and East African regional office of astronomy for the coming solar event. We are planning to celebrate it at Lalibela and also we will have side events in other areas. I’m very happy to discuss it. Let us know the others though and will start our first discussion.
