Sisay Asefa is an emeritus professor of Economics at Western Michigan University and founding Director of the Center for African Development Policy Research and Chief Editor of the International Journal of African Development. Born in Ethiopia, Professor Asefa attended Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia, from 1969-1971. He received his MS in 1976 and a PhD in 1980 in Economics with specialization in Agricultural Economics from Iowa State University. He has published 7, edited and Co-edited, books and about 70 journal articles, including chapters in books and conference proceedings. As a founding Chief Editor, he has published 10 issues of International Journal of African Development, he wrote Introduction and summary of each article in ten Issues. Professor Asefa has been a visiting scholar to Michigan State University, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the University of Botswana, the University of Pretoria, Lund University, Sweden, Kyoto University, Japan,  Oxford University, Bremen University, Germany, University of Science and Technology at Trondheim, Norway, Addis Ababa University,  Adama Science and Technology University, Hadassah University, Horamaya, and Arsi University and New Generation and Harames University Colleges in Ethiopia and University of  Djibouti Faculty of Economics and Law and University of Nairobi, Kenya. Prof. Asefa has received numerous awards and honors including four Fulbright Fellowships, The College of Arts and Sciences Achievement for Professional and Community Service Award in 2007, the University Distinguished Service Award in 2008, the first WMU Excellence in Diversity Award for Faculty in 2011, the College of Arts and Sciences Global Engagement Achievement Award in 2013, and the College of Arts and Sciences Diversity and Inclusiveness Recognition Award in 2014, career global engagement award for Haenicke Institute for Global Education in 2019 and nominated for University Distinguished Award for 2020.
