FIELD SERVICE for University Students as a cushion while you are looking for a job:-Abebe Kebede

If my mathematics helps, I estimate that at least 30000 students graduate from government run Ethiopian universities. Let’s say 20000 of them are absorbed by the various businesses and public service sector, and very few of them go to graduate schools. Now we have 10000 graduates with no work. This can happen because there may be over supply of graduates. The supply can be slowed down by creating a field service program that students in their last year of university career will join industries as interns and teachers in school for a modest pay. The service lasts for one or two years and by the end of the service, they will have good working experience to help them get the jobs they desire or even better they will be guaranteed jobs. What do you think ? Will this work ?

Definitely a very fruitful suggestion. In the short run, government spendings plays vital roles to accommodate the prospective graduates. I would also suggest a long term improvement in the structure of the programs in the universities. More focus should be given on Innovation and practical skills. Approaches to motivate job creation so that the young graduates can benefit from the open opportunities should be supported by again government spendings in the form of for example ‘Start Up support programme.

Dr. Abebe Kebede, excellent idea – sort of like co-op – I totally support it. Win win – industries and students. Variations we can discuss at a future time.

Entrepreneurship play a great role to this doctor, I was tried last year to solve such problems. But the University management couldn’t help me. Even if I saw a little solution.

It’s a wonderful idea Dr. Abebe. Helping universities to produce a skillful graduates will help the government system to speed up. That will give the private sectors to run as fast as they can. Then more jobs will be created.

Kidus Guye -Graduate Intern at NRE: That is a great idea but I have my doubt especially in the industry sector. Many of them don’t look the students as future possible employee and they don’t even have a desire to hire students as intern or coop (at least that is what I noticed while I was back home). If the industries could change this mentality that would be a great solution for the problem facing the country regarding graduate students with no work.

Tiruneh Geberegiorgi Debena:  Dr. it is a good idea. For me the only good sector that can accommodates the jobless youth is Agriculture. Apart from job creation Agri. is a good aspect for food security. Therefore, the govt or any body have to promote small scale irrigation project specially on dry season for group youths all over the country. The agriculture devt will lead them to innovation and industry (edited)

Fetum Ahmed :A wonderful idea indeed, the supply and demand of graduates needs to be balanced some how. Your idea of is not only part of this gap filling process but also give the new graduates hands on practice to make them fit and qualify for the jobs. Moreover the whole education system of the country needs a revolutionary reform.
