ESAN- Congress is a multi disciplinary, multi institutional global forum to bring together the education, R&D and professional communities for the purposes of focused collaboration to help Ethiopia meet its MDG objectives. The particular focus this first forum is to identify opportunities and act on specific actions that can holistically overhaul K-12 through post-graduate education to enable capacity building with world-class quality. The stakeholders for this congress include policy makers, the Ministry of Education, institutions of higher learning, Teacher Training and Vocational Colleges, , special needs communities, professional societies, business communities, R&D organizations and student groups.

Primary Objectives

The critical role that higher education must play in African development is acknowledge by most including US-African Higher Education Imitative. Several planning grants have been awarded to US-Africa institutions for research in several areas including, ICT in Higher Education, Linking Basic and Higher Education, Food Security, Entrepreneurship and Economic Growth, Health and Human Capacity Development.  ESAN-1 tracks these thematic pointers within the following objectives (1) Provide a forum for the Ethiopian education, R&D, and business community to dialogue and identify common objectives leading to effective collaboration that are aligned with the country’s MDG objectives (2) Identify specific actionable time-bound goals for science and technology education to enable sustainable development and world standard quality and (3) Map the path for effective partnership between Ethiopian Diaspora and indigenous science, mathematics, engineering, economics, business, and development institutions (4) Enhance the visibility and showcase the achievements of Ethiopian professional and Academic Societies, such as the Ethiopian Academy of Sciences.

Expected Outcome of the Congress

– The congress will lay the foundation for systematic networking among key stakeholders, institutions of higher learning (academicians, researchers, business community , industry) donors, NGOs  etc., inside and outside the country. – Will identify modalities for strengthened commitment between institutions, professionals, academicians, researchers in the country with those in the Ethiopian Diaspora for active, sustainable and institutionalized and synergistic collaborations. – Identify key roles and accountabilities between the key players ie, ESAN, ABIDE, Academic and research institutions.
