We, the Ethiopians and Friends of Ethiopia, are
appealing to UNESCO to recognize the Geez language and Geez Writing System as world heritage. The Geez language and writing system are integral parts of our cultural heritage, and we believe that they are worthy of recognition and protection.
Geez is the language of the Ethiopian people, and it is deeply intertwined with our history, religion, society, and civilization. The language has been used to record the fundamental narrative of our culture, including our religious beliefs, social norms, and historical events. Volumes of books have been written in Geez, covering a wide range of topics, from history and religion to literature and art.

Furthermore, translations of Geez texts into other languages have been used to testify to the creation of man, his nature, and the universe he lives in. This demonstrates the universal value of the language and its importance in the world’s cultural heritage.
Ethiopia speaks Geez and uses it for time reckoning and as a memory of human achievement over the last few centuries. Geez is an integral part of our cultural identity and has been used to document our people’s great achievements in art, architecture, literature, and medicine.
In addition, the Geez writing system is unique and has led to the emergence of a sophisticated writing system that can be used for any language writing in the world. This system is an essential contribution to the world’s cultural heritage and deserves recognition.
In conclusion, we believe that the Geez language and Geez Writing System are integral parts of the world’s cultural heritage and should be recognized as such. Their inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List would help protect and preserve these important aspects of our cultural heritage for generations to come. We urge UNESCO to consider our appeal and take action to recognize the Geez language and Geez Writing System as world heritage.

እኛ ኢትዮጵያውያን እና የኢትዮጵያ ወዳጆች የግእዝ ቋንቋ እና የግእዝ አጻጻፍ ስርዓት የአለም ቅርስ አድርጎ እንዲያውቅ ዩኔስኮን እንጠይቃለን። የግእዝ ቋንቋና የአጻጻፍ ሥርዓት የባህል ቅርሶቻችን ዋነኛ ክፍሎች ናቸው፤ እነሱም እውቅናና ጥበቃ ሊደረግላቸው ይገባል ብለን እናምናለን።
ግዕዝ የኢትዮጵያ ህዝቦች ቋንቋ ሲሆን ከታሪካችን፣ ከሃይማኖታችን፣ ከማህበረሰባችን እና ከስልጣኔያችን ጋር በእጅጉ የተቆራኘ ነው። ቋንቋው የሀይማኖት እምነቶቻችንን፣ ማህበራዊ ደንቦቻችንን እና ታሪካዊ ሁነቶችን ጨምሮ የባህላችንን መሰረታዊ ትረካ ለመመዝገብ ስራ ላይ ውሏል። ከታሪክና ከሃይማኖት እስከ ሥነ ጽሑፍና ኪነጥበብ ድረስ የተለያዩ ርዕሰ ጉዳዮችን ያካተቱ የመጻሕፍት ጥራዞች በግእዝ ተጽፈዋል።
በተጨማሪም የግእዝ ጽሑፎች ወደ ሌሎች ቋንቋዎች የተተረጎሙ የሰው ልጅ አፈጣጠር፣ ተፈጥሮው እና የሚኖርበት ዩኒቨርስ ለመመስከር ጥቅም ላይ ውለዋል።
ኢትዮጵያ ግእዝ ትናገራለች እና ለጊዜ ስሌት እና ባለፉት ጥቂት ክፍለ ዘመናት የሰው ልጅ ስኬት ለማስታወስ ትጠቀምበታለች።
ግዕዝ የባህል ማንነታችን ዋና አካል ሲሆን ህዝባችን በኪነጥበብ፣በህንፃ፣በሥነ-ጽሑፍ እና በህክምና ያስመዘገባቸውን ታላላቅ ድሎችን ለማስመዝገብ ያገለግል ነበር።
በተጨማሪም የግእዝ አጻጻፍ ሥርዓት ልዩ ከመሆኑም በላይ በዓለም ላይ ለሚገኝ ማንኛውም የቋንቋ አጻጻፍ የሚያገለግል የተራቀቀ የአጻጻፍ ሥርዓት እንዲፈጠር አድርጓል። ይህ ሥርዓት ለዓለም ባህላዊ ቅርሶች ወሳኝ አስተዋጽዖ ነው እና እውቅናም ይገባዋል።
በማጠቃለያው የግእዝ ቋንቋ እና የግእዝ አጻጻፍ ሥርዓት የአለማችን የባህል ቅርሶች ዋና አካል በመሆናቸው እውቅና ሊሰጣቸው ይገባል ብለን እናምናለን። በዩኔስኮ የዓለም ቅርስ መዝገብ ውስጥ መካተታቸው እነዚህን ጠቃሚ የባህል ቅርሶቻችንን ለመጠበቅ እና ለመጪዎቹ ትውልዶች ለማቆየት ይረዳል። ዩኔስኮ የእኛን አቤቱታ ተመልክቶ የግእዝ ቋንቋ እና የግእዝ አጻጻፍ ስርዓትን የዓለም ቅርስ አድርጎ እንዲያውቅ እናሳስባለን።

የኢትዮጵያ ሙዚቃ ድምፁን የሚያስተዳድርበትና ዘመን ተሻጋሪ ዜማዎችን የፈጠረበትን ሥልጣኔ ከሰጠው አባታችን ቅዱስ ያሬድ ጀምሮ የተጀመረ ብዙ ታሪክ አለው። ቅዱስ ያሬድ በግእዝ ቋንቋና ዜማ በኪነ ጥበብ፣ በሣይንስ፣ በሒሳብ እና በኮስሞስ ዕውቀትን ለትውልድና ለዘለዓለም ለማስተላለፍ ተጠቅሟል። የኢትዮጵያ ድምጾች ግእዝ፣ እዝል አራራይ እና ሌሎችም ተብለው በሦስት አጠቃላይ ምድቦች ይከፈላሉ። እነዚህ ድምፆች እግዚአብሔርን እውቅና ይሰጣሉ እና ከተሰጠን እና ወደፊት ከምንሰጠው በረከት ይፈልጋሉ። የግእዝ ድምጽ በአሥር የሙዚቃ ኖቶች ተጽፏል፡ ይዘ (ይዜት)፣ ደረት (ደሬት)፣ ርክርክ (ኢይሪክ)፣ ድፋት (ዲፋት)፣ ጭረት (Xhiret)፣ ቅናት (Qinat)፣ ሒደት (ሒደት)፣ ቁርጥ (ቁርት)፣ ድርስ (ድርስ) እና አንብር (አንቢር) ናቸው። እነዚህ የዘመናት እውቀቶች የኢትዮጵያን የስርዓተ አምልኮ እና ወቅታዊ ድምጽ ወይም ሚዛን 10 ሚዛኖች እና መልከ ቀናትን 6 ሚዛኖችን መሰረት ያደረጉ ናቸው። እነዚህ ሚዛኖች ለኢትዮጵያ ሙዚቃ ወሳኝ ናቸው እና በብዙ ዘመናዊ ዘውጎች ላይ ተጽዕኖ አሳድረዋል። የኢትዮጵያን ሙዚቃ ውበት እና ብልጽግና እያከበርን ባለንበት ወቅት ታሪካችንን እና ባህላችንን አክብረን ለትውልድ እንዲቆይ ለማድረግ እንጥራለን።

Geez and Ethiopian Music
Ethiopian music has a rich history that dates back to our father Saint Yared, who gave Ethiopian civilization a system to manage its voices and create beautiful melodies that have transcended time. Saint Yared used the Geez language and music to transmit knowledge in arts, sciences, mathematics, and the cosmos for generations and to eternity. Ethiopian voices can be divided into three general categories: Geez, Ezil Araray, and others. These voicings acknowledge God and seek blessings from what we are given and what we will be given in the future. The Geez voicing is written in ten musical notations: ይዘት (Yizet), ደረት (Deret), ርክርክ (Eikrik), ድፋት (Difat), ጭረት (Xhiret), ቅናት (Qinat), ሂደት (Hidet), ቁርጥ (Qurt), ድርስ (Dirs), and አንብር (Anbir).These centuries of knowledge have formed the fundamental basis of Ethiopian liturgical and contemporary voicing or scales called Qne, which has 10 scales, and Meleket, which has 6 scales. These scales are essential to Ethiopian music and have influenced many modern genres. As we continue to celebrate the beauty and richness of Ethiopian music, we honor our history and traditions and strive to keep them alive for future generations.
